The opening day's action in Pakistan's second cricket Test against Bangladesh was washed out on Aiug 30 following incessant rain and a wet outfield at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The toss could not take place and the umpires Richard Kettleborough and Michael Gough inspected conditions around noon before calling off the day's play.

Smarting from a 10-wicket loss in the series opener at the same venue, Pakistan are keen to level the two-Test series but the inclement weather kept the teams off the field with more rain forecast for later in the day.

“The first day’s play has been called off due to persistent rain and wet outfield,” the Pakistan Cricket Board said. Neither team left their hotels.

Hosts Pakistan are desperate to square the two-match series after Bangladesh won the first Test, also in Rawalpindi, on Aug 25.

Bangladesh’s victory was their first in 14 Tests against Pakistan. They are aiming to win only their third away series since gaining Test status in 2000, having beaten the West Indies (2009) and Zimbabwe (2021).

After their all-pace ploy backfired in the opening Test, Pakistan included leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed in their playing XI and dropped speedster Shaheen Afridi, allowing him time to spend with his newborn son. REUTERS, AFP
