BERLIN – Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has agreed to sign for German champions Bayern Munich after the two clubs reached a preliminary deal for his move,
Should it be completed, the trade would be the most expensive transfer in Bundesliga history with an expected fee of about €100 million (S$148 million).
Tottenham and Bayern had reportedly agreed on the big-money move on Thursday but needed the consent of Kane, who has another year on his contract and could have more options on the table as a free agent next summer.
Just hours after news of the deal emerged, British media reported that it may fall through as the England captain was leaning towards staying at Spurs.
However, Bild newspaper, without citing a source, said Kane had agreed during the night and is expected to sign a four-year contract with Bayern.
Italian transfer insider Fabrizio Romano also confirmed the news on Friday, tweeting: “Harry Kane to FC Bayern, here we go! Deal completed between all parties as Kane has given final green light.
“Tottenham to receive €100m fixed fee plus add-ons up to €20m package.”
Also on Friday, British media reported that Kane was due to undergo his medical examination in Munich.
Bayern manager Thomas Tuchel was more coy, saying: “We can confirm this but as we speak there is no agreement yet and if there is no agreement yet then the coach cannot talk about someone who is not their player.”
The 30-year-old, who is Spurs’ record scorer, has never won a major trophy in his career but appears set to join a Bayern side who have won 11 straight Bundesliga titles.
The Bavarians have been desperate to bring Kane in as they look to boost their attack strength and battle for the Champions League title once more.
Kane joined Tottenham’s academy aged 11 before making his senior debut in 2011. He has spent most of his career at the north London club but has had loan spells at Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City.
The striker has scored a club-record 280 goals for Spurs in over 430 appearances in all competitions, and 58 times for his country in 84 games, making him their all-time leading marksman.
He is also the second-highest Premier League scorer of all time with 213 goals – 47 behind Alan Shearer, who jokingly tweeted “Come on Harry it’s time to go!” as the news broke on Friday.
Meanwhile, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed the Reds have agreed a British record transfer fee of £110 million (S$189 million) for Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Moises Caicedo.
“The fee with the club is agreed. We will see what that means,” he said on Friday, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League season opener at Chelsea.
However, there was still a twist as Romano later confirmed that Caicedo, the 21-year-old Ecuador international, has informed Liverpool that he only wants to join the Blues.
“Caicedo has decided to keep his word and only accept Chelsea as personal terms were agreed since end of May,” he tweeted. “Chelsea, set to bid again in order to get deal done with Brighton.”
The player had been a target for Chelsea during the current transfer window. But Brighton were determined that he would not leave for less than £100 million.
Liverpool have been rebuilding their midfield following the departures of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Alexis Mac Allister left Brighton for Merseyside in June, while Dominik Szoboszlai has also joined from RB Leipzig.
Liverpool’s reported fee, which would now likely be matched by Chelsea at least, would surpass the previous British record of £107 million that Chelsea paid for Enzo Fernandez in January. REUTERS, AFP
