As we approach the new year, I believe there are several areas in which we, as a nation, can improve our quality of life and better manage resources. These changes could help lower costs for businesses and residents, streamline governance, and create a more mature and respectful society.

First, I wish for counterproductive taxes to be lowered, particularly the petrol tax. The cost of transport, already high for the average worker, is worsened by this tax. While the intention was to encourage the use of public transport, the result has been higher transport costs across all sectors.

Similarly, the tax on electricity and water consumption should be reviewed. Additional taxes could be levied on properties with swimming pools or outdoor water features, and on data centres with high energy demands, to promote greater efficiency.

Second, I hope for better management of the certificate of entitlement (COE) system. For instance, owners with many cars, especially those used sparingly for leisure, should pay higher COE charges.

This would encourage more responsible and efficient use of resources.

Third, I would like to see a national campaign to discourage pedestrians from using mobile phones while crossing roads or walking in crowded areas. This habit endangers safety and reduces situational awareness, leading to avoidable incidents.

Encouraging mindfulness and responsible behaviour on the streets would create a safer environment for everyone.

These changes would help make Singapore a more efficient, equitable and pleasant place to live in for all in 2025 and beyond.
