Businesses are adopting artificial intelligence at pace, and spending heavily to do so. Big Tech alone plans to invest more than US$660 billion (S$844 billion) in 2026. But for most companies, spending is running ahead of visible returns.

A flood of new AI tools has entered the workplace in recent months, taking over routine tasks in sectors from legal to finance – yet the productivity gains remain limited and uneven. Why is that? In a nutshell, many companies are still applying AI only to tasks, instead of redesigning end-to-end workflows, which is where the real gains will come from.
