MERSING - Two men including one Singaporean drowned after being swept away by strong currents while swimming near Pulau Mawar in Endau on the east coast of Johor.

The incident, which occurred at around 2.37pm on April 7, involved three men, said the local fire department.

Mr V. Yogaraj, 37, a Singaporean, was found floating near the water’s surface by members of the public after he drowned, said Endau Fire and Rescue Station chief and senior operations commander Mohd Alias Hussin.

He was taken to shore but pronounced dead at the scene, while Indian national R. Narayanan, 45, was discovered at 4.50pm by rescue personnel about 300m from where he was reported missing.

It was reported earlier that two men had drowned, while Malaysian K. Anpananthan, 39, managed to save himself.

The three men were friends who had travelled from Johor Bahru to Mersing, Mr Alias added.

Firefighters used a rescue rope to retrieve the Indian man’s body, which was later handed over to the police for further action.

The operation was led by the Endau Fire and Rescue Station, with a team of seven personnel deployed using one Light Fire Rescue Tender vehicle and a Hilux unit.

The team arrived at the location at about 2.56pm, approximately 20km from the station. THE STAR/ASIA NEWS NETWORK
