President Donald Trump became the third American president in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives, which voted to formally charge him last Wednesday.

The first article of impeachment charged Mr Trump with abusing his office by suspending military aid and withholding a White House meeting until Ukraine announced what would have been a politically damaging probe into his rival, Democratic front runner Joe Biden.
