Much is being made about US First Lady Melania Trump swiping away the hand of her husband, President Donald Trump, during their first foreign trip abroad.

When the couple arrived at the Ben Gurion International Airport on Monday (May 22) morning, they walked down a red carpet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife, Sara.

In a moment that has been replayed countless times on the Internet, Mrs Trump is a few steps behind as Mr Trump reaches to the back for her hand.

She flicks his hand away sharply, and Mr Trump adjusts his tie and jacket with his hand instead.

While it took only a split second, the clip has gone viral, along with plenty of speculation about what it signifies about the first couple's relationship.

Israeli publication Haaretz posted a slow motion clip of the moment on Twitter with the comment: "Well this is embarrassing".

It was re-tweeted more than 48,000 times.

Some wondered if it spells trouble for the couple's relationship.

But CNN reported that the Trumps have held hands multiple times during their foreign travels this week, including minutes later on the tarmac.

Other news sites have pointed out more instances where Mrs Trump seemed reluctant to hold her husband's hand.

It is possible that she was reminding Mr Trump to adhere to protocol, CNN said. At the White House's Easter Egg Roll last month, she nudged him to put his hand to his heart when the national anthem started playing. That clip also went viral.

Netizens suggested, tongue-in-cheek, that there may have been a fly on Mr Trump's hand.

The White House did not respond to requests for comment and context on the moment, CNN said.

Mr Patti Wood, a body language expert, told Mic.com that Mr Trump's act of reaching back without looking back at his wife was "sort of what you'd do to keep a child in line".

"It's more about, 'come along now', and she's swatting his hand away as a child would, from the top down, saying 'don't lead me'," Mr Wood said.

Thus, Mr Wood reads it as a rejection of the President's patronising gesture and not his touch.

Mr Trump started his tour of the Middle East and Europe in Saudi Arabia on Saturday. He visited the Palestinian Territories and Israel before flying to Rome where he meets Pope Francis and Italian leaders.
