Italy led after eight minutes, but Karl-Heinz Schnellinger levelled for the Germans in stoppage time. In extra time, West Germany took the lead, but Italy scored thrice in 13 minutes.

1978 WORLD CUP 2ND ROUND

With the second group stage of the tournament seeing the winners go straight to the final, the draw meant that both sides were under pressure to overtake the Netherlands, who thrashed Austria 5-1.

1982 WORLD CUP FINAL

Italy took control with three goals in 24 second-half minutes to win their third World Cup and first since 1938.

The opening game of the tournament saw Germany come from behind to claim a draw.

Gianfranco Zola missed a penalty as Italy exited a tournament that Germany went on to win.

Regarded as one of the best games of the tournaments, the goals came late in extra time through Fabio Grosso and Alessandro del Piero.

Germany came into the game as favourites but two goals by Mario Balotelli set up a surprise Italy victory.
