President Halimah Yacob to attend funeral of late Thai King Bhumibol

SINGAPORE - President Halimah Yacob will attend the funeral of Thailand's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej, which will be held in Bangkok next week.

She will attend the Royal Cremation Ceremony of the late monarch, who died in October last year after seven decades on the throne.

The funeral of King Bhumibol will take place over five days, and about 250,000 mourners are expected.

The cremation ceremony will be held on Thursday at Sanam Luang, a public square in front of the Grand Palace.

Madam Halimah, who will be accompanied by her husband Mohamed Abdullah Alhabshee, will be in Thailand from Thursday to Friday.

Other officials from the President's Office and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will also accompany her on the visit.

During Madam Halimah's absence, chairman of the Council of Presidential Advisers J Y Pillay will exercise the functions of the office of the President.
