Former premier Bob Hawke set the frame for a foreign policy that served Australia well for decades: America kept it safe while China made it rich. Prime Minister Scott Morrison now has to chart a new course in a changed world.

It seemed somehow emblematic that Mr Bob Hawke, among the very greatest of Australia's prime minsters, should have passed away just a few days before the country's general election last week.

As they remembered Mr Hawke's style, stature and achievements, Australians were reminded of what real national leadership looks like, and of how uninspiring and ineffectual the major contenders in the election campaign appeared by comparison.
