SINGAPORE - When Ms Sandy Sabrina Tan, 44, moved into her first marital home in Hougang, she had hoped to lay to rest her unhappy childhood memories.

She could not wait to leave her family's cramped rental flat in Toa Payoh, which she likens to a "gambling den" filled with poker, mahjong, drinking and smoking. Her late salesman father was an alcoholic and a gambler.
