Ms Zali Steggall is known in Australia as one of the country's best ever alpine skiers, but the former Olympian has set herself a new challenge: She has launched a campaign to defeat former prime minister Tony Abbott in his seat at the upcoming federal election.

A bronze medallist at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano in Japan, Ms Steggall, now a barrister, is running as an independent candidate in the leafy Sydney electorate of Warringah.
